Six starts. Six top-ten finishes. An eight-point margin. Chelby Hinton's unlikely 2026 USAC Silver Crown campaign ended with Rookie of the Year honors.

At the start of the year, the Dubberly, Louisiana driver was hardly planning a full Silver Crown rookie campaign. He missed four of the first five races, had never raced on pavement and depended on opportunities that came together as the season unfolded. By the time the series reached Toledo Speedway for its finale, the 21-year-old was fighting Hayden Reinbold for one of the season's closest rookie titles.

From Louisiana to the Silver Crown stage

Hinton's route into national open-wheel racing began far from the usual heartlands of the sport. A native of tiny Dubberly, he worked his way through micro sprints and midgets, forming a relationship with legendary mechanic Bob East. East connected him with pavement car owner Charles Breidinger, opening a door Hinton had not expected to walk through in 2026.

His first pavement experience came in June at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park for the Hoosier Hundred. He finished ninth, completing 99 of 100 laps. For a driver learning the discipline on the fly, it was an impressive introduction.

Opportunity became a championship push

Hinton returned at Iowa Speedway and finished ninth despite a late mechanical issue. Then East and Terry Klatt helped put together dirt-mile opportunities at Springfield and Du Quoin, where he finished tenth and sixth. A ninth-place finish at Eldora kept his consistency intact and placed the rookie award within reach.

What began as a handful of starts had become a legitimate title pursuit. Hinton entered the Toledo finale six points behind Reinbold. The rivals arrived with very different preparations, but both faced the challenge of racing unfamiliar pavement machinery.

Hinton delivered another top-ten finish at Toledo while Reinbold finished seventeenth after engine trouble. The result flipped the rookie standings: Hinton finished on 279 points, Reinbold on 271.

More than a trophy

Across six Silver Crown starts, Hinton never finished worse than tenth, racing on both dirt and pavement. He became the first Louisiana driver to score USAC Silver Crown points and the first from the state to earn the series' Max Papis Innovations Rookie of the Year honor.

The finish also underscored the importance of the people who kept his season going. East, Klatt, Breidinger and their teams helped transform sporadic opportunities into a historic rookie campaign. It is the sort of outcome that makes grassroots open-wheel racing compelling: a talented driver, a network of believers and a championship that was not part of the original plan.
